Fiber and probiotics

A very insightful article was published this past weekend in a New Hampshire newspaper. This article relates very closely to January’s newsletter. Though the article is written from the viewpoint of general benefits of fiber, it does address many topics of which I continually stress the importance.

Enjoy the article and start eating your fiber!

Detox: Helpful or harmful?

It’s interesting that on the same day as my last post about the mainstream emergence of probiotics, the New York Times published an article about detox methods. While detox methods of various sorts have been popular among celebrities and holistic health enthusiasts, physicians are wary about the health implications.

Diets comprised of herbs and liquids will no doubt cause weight loss. Many of these programs contain laxatives and diuretics, not a lovely feeling for people always on the go. The question as to whether these programs can cause significant health implications is still in the air. However, physicians indicate there is no scientific basis for the theory that a detox program will clean you “of all evil” substances.

For those looking to clean the gut and increase overall health, probiotics remain a healthy, safe option.

Mainstream Medicine is going Alternative

Many physicians are hesitant to prescribe alternative treatments to patients. Within the alternative realm are some extremely viable and helpful medical solutions, but there are also some strange and wacky ideas as well. For this reason, alternative medicine has unfortunately earned a poor reputation – until recently.

An article published this morning in the Chicago Tribune assesses the degree to which physicians are now prescribing alternative treatments for patients. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is comprised of four main categories: (1) natural products, (2) energy medicine, (3) manipulative medicine, and (4) mind-body medicine.

Good News for Heavy Drinkers: Probiotics Improve Liver Function

Everyday I am impressed with the new probiotic research. Last month Alcohol magazine published a research article about the ability of probiotics to improve liver function in heavy drinkers. I am by no means encouraging excess use of alcohol, but it is comforting to know a safe, naturally-occurring supplement such as a probiotic can have a positive impact on the liver.

In the study, participants were either given a standard therapy or a probiotic for five consecutive days. At the completion of the study, participants who received the probiotic had better liver function and a higher number of beneficial bacteria within the gut.

More information about this study is available:

Diverticulitis and Probiotics

This month’s newsletter is about diverticulitis and the impact probiotics may have on this condition. Click Here for the January 2009 Newsletter.

There are a number of studies investigating dietary causes of diverticulitis. Today I stumbled upon this brief article discussing one of those recent studies: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/134683.php

In the newsletter, I indicated physicians used to believe nuts and popcorn were among the types of food suspect to causing diverticulitis. This article references one such study that has found the former belief about nuts and corn is simply not the case.

Enjoy your popcorn, just be sure to take EndoMune in the morning.
